Single-ply means one factory-made sheet covers the roof: TPO, PVC or EPDM. It is light, quick to lay and common on Scottsdale commercial buildings. In this climate the choice mostly comes down to reflectivity and how the seams are joined. We look at the deck, insulation, drainage and rooftop equipment before suggesting which sheet fits.
Single-ply roof membranes refer to the wide range of products used to cover the rooftop of a structure in one layer. These single-ply systems can be divided into two basic groups – thermosets and thermoplastics. Thermoset membranes are made from synthetic rubber polymers like EPDM and Neoprene. Thermoplastics, like TPO and PVC, are plastic-based and are easily heat-formed to a roof’s particular design. Once they cool, they harden again in their new shape. This makes the seams of thermoplastic single-ply roofing extremely strong.
Both of these roofing membranes are excellent for large roof installations because they’re manufactured in large sizes minimizing the seams needed for a single roof. They also include, whether white or black in color, additives like carbon black or titanium dioxide to increase their UV resistance and reflective properties.
Thermosets and thermoplastics also have the following in common:
- Excellent protection from the elements – including acid rain.
- Unmatched performance under dramatic weather changes.
- Stands up to the majority of chemicals.
- Available in a wide variety of grades for increased protection.
- Lightweight, easy to install, and extremely cost-effective.
